Step into the courtroom and explore the inner workings of the legal system!
Course Description
In this interactive course, students will participate in the exciting experience of a mock trial, exploring the key components of trial practice and what goes into preparing and presenting arguments on hypothetical legal cases. Students will contemplate the moral and ethical considerations in complex historical case studies, practicing critical thinking and analysis that they will apply to their mock trials. The course will examine different viewpoints of various players and the roles they play in a trial, including attorneys, defendants, witnesses, judges, and jurors, and then try their hand at participating on both sides of a trial. Two cases will be presented, with students alternating roles between prosecution and defense. In groups, students will develop opening statements, witness statements, examinations, cross examinations, closing statements, and a final decision by the jury and judge. Students will learn tips and techniques for persuasive opening statements, cross examination, and closing arguments, honing their speaking and debate skills.
